Position overview
The Learning Support Teacher will be responsible for supporting the academic and social and emotional needs of students within the Middle school. They will work directly with students who have mild to moderate learning needs within a mainstream setting. They have a caseload of students across the Middle school. Their schedule will include both Learning Support Classes and co-teaching in Core Classes.
They play a pivotal role in developing collaborative relationships with administrators, teachers and parents to support a diverse range of learners. The Learning Support Teacher is a key member of the Student Success Team and works with the school counselors, general education teachers and principal to identify and plan for the needs of individual students. The Learning Support Teacher will work with the Middle school and K12 Inclusion Services Team to develop inclusive practices in our community and expand opportunities for our students.
Preferred Qualifications:
The Learning Support Teacher should have:
● Bachelor’s degree in special education/Learning Support, Masters preferred
● License or certification in Special Education/Learning Support
Preferred skills and experience
● Successful experience teaching Learning Support in the Secondary Level
● Experience working with students with a wide range of needs
● Ability to plan for Tier 3 intervention at the secondary level
● Experience teaching and supporting in the math and sciences
● Experience with implementation of a multi-tiered system of support at the secondary level
● Ability to use student evaluation data to develop Individual Learning Plans
● Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers and others
● Positive attitude and proven belief that all students can learn
● Ability to establish and participate in collaborative structures
● Proven ability to use learning data to explore and improve teaching and learning practices
● Successful experiences with advisory programming
● Successful experiences with inspiring or leading innovative practices
● Recent and relevant professional development in the field of Learning Support
● Experience leading teams through the change management process
● Experience working with students with intensive needs and/or in schools with intensive needs programs
● Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
● Ability to lead professional learning with colleagues
Performance Responsibilities:
Teachers at AISJ are expected to:
● Communicate and liaise on a regular basis with fellow team department/grade members with regards to planning, assessment, parent and community contact, subject organization and classroom issues including discipline, expectations and routines
● Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues promote social and emotional awareness
● Take an active role in the advisory of class groups
● Constructively contribute to, staff meetings
● Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents

Taxes

AISJ pays the South African income tax liability for salary and all taxable benefits in accordance with the accompanying salary scale document.

Accommodation

The School shall provide you with ready to move in accommodation in accordance to your family size.

Medical

Health care in South Africa is very good. There are a number of excellent private hospitals in Johannesburg and Pretoria that have all the facilities to cater for any type of emergency. There are numerous doctors’ offices located throughout the suburbs and they are easily accessible. Much of the equipment used by doctors in South Africa is state of the art, and most doctors’ offices are very well equipped. The school pays 100% of the contribution towards worldwide medical coverage. The medical policy is through the Scholars Health Insurance Program and provides 100% coverage outside the U.S. and Canada, 100% inside the U.S. if you use the First Health Network of Physicians and Hospitals, and 80% if you choose to go outside the network in the United States. A Certificate of Coverage from your current medical insurer is required to be submitted to Scholars to avoid any pre-existing conditions penalties or waiting periods being applied. The Certificate of Coverage should include children where applicable. Coverage includes basic dental, but not vision. You pay for doctors’ bills at the time of service, and then a claim form with attached receipts is submitted to HTH Worldwide for processing and reimbursement. We are happy to say that our service from HTH have been exceptional.

Disability

The School provides a life insurance policy, which pays four times your annual salary in the event of an approved claim, and a disability policy, which pays up to 60% of your base monthly salary to a maximum benefit of $6,500 per month up to age 65, in the event of an approved claim. The School pays all premiums on these policies and all overseas hired teachers are automatically enrolled. You will complete a beneficiary nomination form during the orientation session when you arrive in South Africa

Retirement

Based on the rules of Fund the normal age of retirement for the teacher shall accordingly be 65 years of age.

All benefit contributions will automatically terminate when the teacher turns 65 years of age
