Job Title: Head of Department(HOD)of PE
Reports to: Head of Academic Centre, Principal
Supervises: Teachers in Department
Executive Summary:
The HOD is the leader and organiser of teaching and curriculum development in the subject, and is responsible for the quality of teaching and the development of the subject
Core Mission:
1.Establish the vision of subject development, accurately grasp and lead the direction of subject development.
2. Determine the organisational structure and recruitment needs of the subject, and effectively promote team building and development of the team.
3. Carry out diagnostics and provide effective academic and teaching leadership.
4. Responsible for the quality of curriculum development and evaluation of individual courses.
5. To set the professional standard within the department and understand the school’s wider development and be able to represent, and make decisions from the school's perspective.
6. Be fair and impartial, so that each teacher is encouraged to develop their professional skills.
Specific Responsibilities:
1.Support subject teachers to study the subject curriculum standards, and clarify the education and teaching objectives.
2. Lead the curriculum development plan of the subject, plan the curriculum resources and research and development of the subject.
3. Grasp the general direction of curriculum reform and communicate the direction of the subject, including changes to how the subject is assessed.
4.To define and develop departmental improvement plans and to monitor their implementation, setting department targets as necessary.
5. Promote research in the discipline to enhance the delivery of the subject.
6. Recommend teaching and research team leaders and subject coordinators, provide them with guidance and effectively allocated resources.
7. Ensure the professional growth of teachers, and be able to provide various methods and suitable platforms to promote teacher development.
8. Lead on curriculum, and co-curricular (including teams and Sports Day), development and coordinate resource sharing within the subject, establishing common standards.
9. To oversee the assessment of the subject and ensure reporting of results are in line with agreed standards and are within reasonable time periods.
10. To reasonably formulate the department budget, and effectively implement.
11. To lead the evaluation of prospective teachers.
12. To communicate with human resources on new teacher placement and temporary staff deployment, and make proper arrangements including induction of new staff to the department.
13. To record attendance of the staff in the department and submits it to registrar and to assign the cover staff for the sick leave or any kinds of leave.
14. To implement the performance management of teachers within the subject, including regular monitoring, student surveys, complaints, target setting, observations and performance reviews and to collaborate with HR, AC and Divisions on teacher pay.
15. To represent the department at meetings, contribute to relevant school policy making and implementation, and support the school liaison and marketing activities
16. To produce annual examinations (including CIE exams and internal exams) analysis and department review.
17. To communicate with parents, especially in activities such as school open days, Parents Conferences and, where necessary, matters affecting student wellbeing and outcomes.
18. To work with Division Leaders to ensure staff of the department use effective methods to identify and help students who are underachieving and create plans of action.
19. To monitor attendance and collaborate with Division Leaders to ensure high levels of attendance for the successful delivery of the subject at division level.
20. To produce an annual review and development plan.
21. To lead on health and safety including overseeing risk assessments.
Other Specific Duties
1. To play a full part in the life of school community, and to fully support its distinctive mission, vision, strategies, policies and values as demonstrated, and to encourage staff and students to follow this example.
2. To commit to ongoing professional development both within the subject and appropriate leadership training.
3. To engage actively in the performance management process.
4. To undertake any other reasonable duty as specified by the Principal not mentioned in the above.
For the above duties it is expected that HODs will have 12 periods a week as teaching allocation.
