Position overview
The American International School of Johannesburg seeks a dynamic English educator to join its faculty for the 2026-2027 school year. The English teacher will help students as both individuals and collaborators, will foster an appreciation of language and literature, and will provide a joyful and supportive learning environment. Candidates should be energetic, collaborative, and progressive-minded.
This position will consist of a full-time assignment in the High School, which could include sections of Grade 9 English, Grade 10 English, Grade 11/12 AISJ English (taught with mixed grades on a two-year rotation), and IBDP Language & Literature. The position will entail teaching across grade levels. The High School operates on an 8-period rotating block schedule, and teachers are assigned to teach 6 of 8 blocks as well as an Eagle Forum advisory class.
The English Teacher develops positive relationships with families, AISJ team members, and the greater AISJ community. The English Teacher is an active community leader, contributing to curricular and extra-curricular initiatives that promote community and wellbeing

Qualifications, Experiences, & Role Specific Requirements
The English teacher should have:
● Current secondary license or certification for teaching English, with a preference for a master’s degree
● A minimum of an undergraduate degree in English
● Recent training in IBDP Language & Literature
● An understanding of High School philosophy and an ability to communicate with HS students
● A willingness to embrace an inclusive school environment while focusing on differentiated instruction and integrated learning
● Successful experience teaching HS English
● A positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills
● Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs, which encourage problem solving, critical thinking skills, and develop a sense of classroom community and trust
● Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners
● Ability to establish and participate in collaborative structures
● Ability to standardize assessments to ensure a collective understanding of achievement
● A solid understanding of HS organization, programs, and students
● A willingness and ability to reflect and critically examine teaching practices, set goals, and commit to continuous improvement
● An understanding of the Common Core Standards and concept-driven learning
● Experience in teaching research and writing in the content area
● Experience in teaching a concept-based curriculum
● Strong organizational and time management skills
● A team player with the ability to take initiative
● Curriculum and assessment development, particularly competency-based learning and planning using Understanding By Design
● Using hands-on engagements and assessments to help students make connections to the world around them
● Technology integration and the ability to teach the appropriate use of AI
● Experience in creating differentiated and personalized learning experiences

Work
Number of Workdays: Monday through Friday - 188 (one hundred and eighty-eight) days per school year.
Workday: 7:10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 7:10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Full-Time Teacher: Secondary Teachers will teach 6 of 8 in the block schedule.
Other Duties As Assigned: The Teacher will be expected to perform any work assigned to them that is within their skills and capabilities and to be flexible about changes to this function that may be required from time to time for operational reasons. This includes other duties as assigned by their supervisor from time to time.

Taxes

AISJ pays the South African income tax liability for salary and all taxable benefits in accordance with the accompanying salary scale document.

The School shall provide you with ready to move in accommodation in accordance to your family size.

Medical

Health care in South Africa is very good. There are a number of excellent private hospitals in Johannesburg and Pretoria that have all the facilities to cater for any type of emergency. There are numerous doctors’ offices located throughout the suburbs and they are easily accessible. Much of the equipment used by doctors in South Africa is state of the art, and most doctors’ offices are very well equipped. The school pays 100% of the contribution towards worldwide medical coverage. The medical policy is through the Scholars Health Insurance Program and provides 100% coverage outside the U.S. and Canada, 100% inside the U.S. if you use the First Health Network of Physicians and Hospitals, and 80% if you choose to go outside the network in the United States. A Certificate of Coverage from your current medical insurer is required to be submitted to Scholars to avoid any pre-existing conditions penalties or waiting periods being applied. The Certificate of Coverage should include children where applicable. Coverage includes basic dental, but not vision. You pay for doctors’ bills at the time of service, and then a claim form with attached receipts is submitted to HTH Worldwide for processing and reimbursement. We are happy to say that our service from HTH have been exceptional.

Disability

The School provides a life insurance policy, which pays four times your annual salary in the event of an approved claim, and a disability policy, which pays up to 60% of your base monthly salary to a maximum benefit of $6,500 per month up to age 65, in the event of an approved claim. The School pays all premiums on these policies and all overseas hired teachers are automatically enrolled. You will complete a beneficiary nomination form during the orientation session when you arrive in South Africa

Retirement

Based on the rules of Fund the normal age of retirement for the teacher shall accordingly be 65 years of age.

All benefit contributions will automatically terminate when the teacher turns 65 years of age
