The Research Librarian plays a crucial role in supporting academic excellence at GWA by facilitating access to high-quality information resources and providing specialized assistance for extended essays and research projects, particularly within the IB curriculum. This position is pivotal in enhancing the learning experience through expert management of both electronic and print resources and works closely with the Administration, Director of Teaching & Learning, DP Coordinator, Staff and Students.

Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities with Students and Teaching Staff:
Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of English print and electronic resources, with a focus on research materials pertinent to extended essays and IB curriculum requirements.
Manage the teacher resource room and advise teaching staff on the selection and integration of relevant research resources to support classroom instruction and student projects.
Maintain proficiency in Arabic and French literature, ensuring a diverse range of resources for multi-language support.
Stay informed about advancements in digital resources and technologies, integrating the most effective tools into the library’s offerings.
Expertly navigate library management systems such as Mandarin, Ebsco, and Microsoft Office to optimize resource access and usage.
Oversee the cataloging of all media, with a particular emphasis on research materials and academic resources.
Provide library/information assistance to individuals, small groups and classes and help students and teachers do research.
In consultation with teachers, provide support for students with special reading needs.
Support for Research and Academic Development:
Provide personalized research assistance for students, including support for extended essays, thesis development, and other significant academic projects.
Prepare and organize resources specifically tailored to support IB curriculum requirements and advanced research projects.
Facilitate workshops and one-on-one sessions to enhance students’ research skills, including information literacy and critical analysis.
Encourage a culture of inquiry and academic excellence through targeted reading programs and research initiatives.
Library Management and Coordination:
Manage the daily operations of the library, ensuring an efficient, welcoming environment conducive to academic research and study.
Selects and acquires high-quality research materials and resources to support the educational goals of the school.
Develops and implements library policies and procedures for resource circulation, cataloging, and maintenance.
Organizes and coordinates library enrichment activities, such as book fairs and special research-focused events, to engage the school community.
Reflect cultural understanding and guide others in handling sensitive issues involving book selection, cultural, geographical, religious, or political issues.
Hire, train, oversee and direct the Library Staff, including Assistants, Coordinators for French and Arabic resources and volunteers as needed.
Conduct annual evaluations and provide professional development opportunities to enhance staff effectiveness
Provide regular updates and reports on library activities, resource needs, and academic support to the Head of School and other administrative staff.
Contribute to strategic planning for the library’s future, including the development of new services and resource acquisition.
Act as a liaison between Library Staff and the Administration, ensuring clear communication and alignment with school goals.
Financial Responsibilities:
Manage the daily operations of the library, ensuring an efficient, welcoming environment conducive to academic research and study.
Assist in preparing and managing the library budget, ensuring alignment with academic priorities and resource needs.
Make informed purchasing decisions within budget constraints and oversees financial tracking related to library resources.
Manage the tracking of overdue books, fees, and the handling of lost or damaged book charges, communicating necessary information to parents.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Abilities:
Master’s degree in Library Science or a related field is required.
Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a research library, academic library, or a similar environment where advanced research support was a key responsibility.
Demonstrated experience in conducting and supporting research, including the ability to use specialized databases, archival collections, and other research tools.
Experience in helping patrons with literature reviews, data management, and citation management tools and the ability to assist researchers in selecting appropriate resources.
Proficiency in using digital research tools, online databases, electronic journals, and other digital resources.
Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research tools and techniques and the analytical ability to synthesize relevant information from various sources to provide comprehensive research support.
Expertise in teaching information literacy, including evaluating sources, understanding scholarly communication, and navigating digital resources.
Excellent oral and written communication skills for interacting with faculty, students, researchers, and other patrons.
A strong commitment to providing high-quality service to library users, including the ability to anticipate and respond to their needs effectively.
Language Proficiency in English, French and Arabic is preferred.
Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
