to join our team. The role involves teaching an intensive English Language Acquisition programme to secondary students who are beginners in English when they first join BSL. It also involves supporting other BSL students with their acquisition of the English language, as well teaching a range of EAL community learners within our specialist BSL English Language Institute (BSL ELI). Some of your regular teaching hours will be allocated to evening classes within the BSL ELI, so a willingness to work flexible hours is essential. An EAL leadership role could also potentially be available for the right applicant.
English is the main language of instruction at BSL. Togo has recently joined the Commonwealth and the visibility and desirability of the English language within Togo is gradually increasing. However, Togo is historically a Francophone country, and our learners come from many different countries and cultures. Whilst our younger learners will naturally absorb English through language acquisition within their mainstream classrooms, when older learners arrive they often require a period of intensive English language learning, before they are able to access the mainstream curriculum in English. As an international school, we are committed to supporting the language needs of all of our learners, and this is also an exciting opportunity to help us develop the BSL English Language Institute as a leading centre of English language acquisition within the Togolese community.
Further Details:
The teacher appointed will be a first language English speaker.
The role would suit an experienced and well qualified teacher of EAL, with a particular interest in developing and teaching bespoke intensive English programmes to beginners. The needs and requirements of each individual student or community learner will vary, so having the creativity to devise differing programmes for differing learner needs is essential. For example, a learner's needs might be:
- To acquire a sufficient basic command of the English language to enable them to access the mainstream BSL curriculum in English;
- To receive ongoing additional support with their English language acquisition, whilst already enrolled within the mainstream curriculum;
- To work towards a specific academic qualification in English, such as IELTS, IGCSE English as a Second Language, or IBDP English Ab Initio;
- To follow a bespoke course in Business English to enable them to develop their professional portfolio as an adult
Thus, a flexible approach to planning and implementing a range of different English language acquisition programmes is an essential requirement of this role.
